Exploring a New Pathway in the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension

If you have uncontrolled blood sugar (type 2 diabetes mellitus) and blood pressure (hypertension), you may be at a much higher risk of suffering an event such as a stroke1. Patients who are already following their doctor’s advice to exercise, eat right, and take medication, and still have uncontrolled blood sugar and blood pressure may need another option to bring them under control and reduce their risk.

Neurotronic is developing , a new investigational therapy designed to work along with lifestyle changes and medication to reduce blood sugar and blood pressure.

What is Neuviant?

NeuviantTM Multi-organ Denervation (MDN) is a new investigational treatment developed by Neurotronic that is designed to target overactive nerves and reduce their activity to help control your type 2 diabetes and hypertension with a single procedure that treats both kidneys (renal) and the liver (hepatic). Together renal and hepatic denervation is called multi-organ denervation, a new investigational therapy that aims to reduce both A1c (Hemoglobin A1c, or HbA1c) and blood pressure.

Where are these nerves and what do they do?

The “fight or flight” nerves, also called “sympathetic” nerves (shown in the image of the kidneys to the right as a network of yellow lines), are located throughout your body and are turned on, or activated, when we’re under stress. For example, imagine you’re stuck in a traffic jam while already running late for an important meeting. You feel your pulse in your neck and the sweat forming on your brow. Your brain talks to your organs through the sympathetic nerves, telling them to raise your blood pressure and make sugar available, because you’re going to need it. Unfortunately, if your blood sugar and blood pressure stay high all the time, your risk of having a stroke or heart attack is higher, too. This is why your doctors recommend that you exercise (get a good sweat going), eat right (easy on the sugar), and take medications. They want your blood sugar and blood pressure reduced to a normal range, so your body doesn’t live in a constant state of stress.

What happens in the Neuviant MDN procedure?

In the Neuviant MDN procedure, your doctor uses a specially designed catheter (a tube less than 2.5mm wide, or 1/10th of an inch) placed in blood vessels near your kidneys and liver to deliver pure alcohol (ethanol) close to the “fight-or-flight” nerves using very small needles. When the alcohol reaches the overactive nerves, it disrupts how the nerves work, interrupting the signals that are telling your body to increase how much sugar is in the blood and increase blood pressure. Together with medication, diet, and lifestyle changes your doctor recommends, this new treatment is designed to reduce both high blood sugar and high blood pressure with a single procedure, with the goal of keeping them in a healthy range.

How do I find a doctor near me?

In the United States, the TRIUMPH clinical study will soon begin enrolling participants whose blood sugar and blood pressure remain high even though they follow their doctor’s advice to stay active and take their medications for both conditions. If this describes you, you may be eligible for Neuviant MDN treatment. Please check back later to find the hospitals that are participating. You may also contact Neurotronic directly.
